From sterilising puddles to using essential oils as repellent, read on for tips on how to keep mosquitos away.

How to get rid of mosquitoes

As well as causing painful bites and sleepless nights, mosquitos can carry life-changing diseases, which is why it’s important to eliminate them from your home. If you want to know how to kill mosquitoes and make your own home remedies for mosquitos, here are some proven methods to get you started.

How to repel mosquitoes with homemade traps

One of the best home remedies for mosquitoes is making your own mosquito traps from ingredients you can find in your kitchen cupboard. Dissolve three tablespoons of brown sugar in hot water. Cut a large plastic bottle in half and pour the mixture into the bottom half of the bottle. Let the mixture cool before adding a gram of yeast into the bottle. Mix it together. Turn the top of half of the bottle upside down, place it inside the bottle half of the bottle and tape it to the sides, forming a funnel. Place a trap in each room, changing the mixture every two weeks.

Prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and being hatched

If you’re noticing that there are pools of water around your house and yard, squirt Jif into them to kill existing larvae or prevent mosquitos from laying eggs in them in the first place. Where possible, keep damp and humid areas in your house dry and clean, making sure the surfaces are sterilised with Domestos. Before mosquito season begins, always make sure that damp areas – inside and outside of your house – are removed or disinfected.

Mosquito screens and nets

Install all windows and doors that you open on a regular basis with mosquito screens to stop them from entering your home. Mosquitos can be particularly aggressive at night, so ensure your bed is draped with a mosquito net. Regularly check the net for holes and patch them up before you go to bed.

How to keep mosquitoes away with neem oil

If you’re looking for a natural way of getting rid of mosquitos, neem oil is famed for repelling insects. Burn neem oil in an oil lamp for fifteen minutes to a clear a room of mosquitoes. If you want to know how to prevent mosquito bites, mix it with coconut oil and apply it to your skin as a natural repellent. It can be harsh on sensitive skin, so always test it out on a small area of skin first to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.

Managing mosquitoes can feel like an ongoing battle. Fortunately, there are many simple ways you can prevent them from laying eggs, entering your home and biting you with common ingredients and tools you can find in your house.
