How to clean the toilet

Getting ready to clean the toilet? Discover our 6 step routine for getting toilets squeaky clean!

It’s necessary to know how to clean a toilet, but sometimes you just don’t want to think about it too much, do you? But actually, the truth is that while this particular household task doesn’t sound very pleasant, the toilet is actually one of the easier things in your house to clean. It’s best to do it fairly often, as regular cleaning will prevent persistent staining and limescale build-up. So we recommend that you use the method below and follow about once every two weeks.

Before you start actually cleaning toilets, you’ll need to get your hands on the following items:

  • A toilet brush. It’s best to use a brush with plastic bristles for toilet cleaning – wire brushes can damage the enamel surface of your toilet, and potentially lead to long-term weakness. (Remember to keep your toilet brush and toilet brush holder clean as well – this article has some good tips.)
  • A good quality toilet cleaner. Products made specifically for toilet cleaning will be scented to stop the bathroom smelling too much like a swimming pool, and may contain other ingredients to help combat specific problems. Something like Domestos Extended Germ Kill will help eliminate harmful bacteria, while the handy hooked nozzle makes for easy application.
  • Rubber gloves. We recommend keeping a pair of rubber gloves solely for toilet cleaning use, to avoid cross-contamination. We suggest buying a pair of a different colour to the other gloves in your home, so you know which are which.
  • Multi-purpose cleaning wipes.
  • An anti-bacterial spray like Cif.

Remember to keep toilet cleaning products well away from your eyes and mouth, and out of the reach of children. Wear protective clothing, follow any instructions on the product label, and make sure the windows and doors are open to keep the area being cleaned well ventilated.

How to Clean Toilets

  1. First, put on your gloves and get your toilet cleaning product ready.
  2. Next, lift up the seat, and apply a small amount of toilet cleaner to the rim.
  3. Move onto the bowl – squirt some of your cleaning solution in, and scrub the whole thing thoroughly with the brush, including beneath the rim.
  4. If there are any stubborn stains or limescale, you’ll need to opt for a specialist product for the entire process – try using something like Domestos Zero Limescale to tackle problems associated with hard water areas, or Total Blast for tough dirt. Follow the product instructions for the best results.
  5. Remember to scrub the entire inside of the toilet thoroughly, including right into the u-bend. This will help remove any lingering smells.
  6. Once you’re done with the inside, spray both sides of the seat and lid with anti-bacterial spray, and wipe them down with multi purpose wipes. Do the same to the rest of the outside of the toilet.

There you have it – a clean fragrant toilet, with no fuss. Easy!
