How to Hand-Wash Your Silk Sarees

  1. Step 1: Wash in Cold Water

Hand-washing your silk saree is the best option. While you hand-wash this fabric, remember always to use cold water. So, take a large bucket, fill it with cold water and soak your saree in it.

  2. Step 2: Add Vinegar

Add 2 tbsp. of vinegar to the bucket and mix well. Let your silk saree soak in this solution for 15-20 minutes.

  3. Step 3: Ensure Colour from Fading

Next, place your saree in another bucket of cold water to wash. Always use a mild detergent to wash your silk saree. A mild detergent will not only clean but also protect the fabric of your saree. Delicate garments made from silk require extra care and using a mild detergent can work wonders. We recommend Love and Care, which is available in the market. L&C’s NO bleach with Anti-colour Fading formulation not only prevents fading but also retains colour.

  4. Step 4: Rinse Your Saree

Take your saree out of the soapy water and rinse. You can either rinse it gently in a bucket of water or under a running tap.

  5. Step 5: Dry Your Saree

Take a dry towel and place your wet saree over it. Then, place another dry towel over the silk saree. Now, gently roll the towel over your saree and squeeze out water from the towel. Once the excess water has been removed, air-dry your saree in the shade.

  6. Step 6: Store it the Right Way

After your silk saree is completely dry, wrap it in a muslin cloth and store it in your cupboard.

How to Machine-Wash Your Silk Sarees

  1. Step 1: Read the Care Label Instruction

If the wash care label says, Dry Clean Only, please do not toss your silk clothing item in the washing machine.

  2. Step 2: Choose the Settings

Set the machine on a gentle cycle and use cold water to rinse the silk saree. The water temperature should not exceed 30 C.

  3. Step 3: Use a Pillowcase

Do not drop the saree directly in the machine drum. Put it in an old pillow case to prevent it from snagging against the machine drum.

  4. Step 4: Use a Good Detergent

Delicate garments made from silk clothes require extra care and using a detergent can work wonders. We recommend Love and Care, which is available in the market.

  5. Step 5: Do not Use the Dryer

Lay your silk saree on a flat surface and let it dry in a shaded place, away from direct sunlight.
