RO or UV Water Purifier? This Guide Will Put an End to the Debate!

You’ll have to bear a few things in mind when you choose a water purifier. Apart from the brand and budget, you also have to consider whether to choose an RO or UV purifier. Understanding the pros and cons of each is crucial before making a purchase. Here we simplify the technologies behind both purifiers so that you can pick one that’s right for you.

Water is classified as hard or soft depending on the number of dissolved solids in water. So, the first thing you need to identify is the water’s TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels

1) RO (Reverse Osmosis): For Water with High TDS Levels

This technology eliminates the solids dissolved in water. It has a membrane that filters contaminants such as chemicals and bacteria and purifies the water. How does this happen? The system moves the molecules using the pressure difference from incoming water across the membrane, leaving impurities behind.

RO purifiers are recommended when purifying water which has high TDS levels. RO purifiers are low-cost and low-maintenance, and consume negligible electricity.

2) UV (Ultraviolet): For Water with Low TDS Levels

In a UV-based purifier, UV rays destroy the microbes after the water has passed the RO stage. Water is exposed to UV rays, which penetrate the cells of the bacteria and destroy their ability to reproduce. While UV lamps require annual replacement, the UV unit uses the same amount of energy as a 60W light bulb, making it affordable.

Because UV purifiers can’t remove dissolved or un-dissolved impurities from water, it is recommended to buy a UV water purifier when the water source has low TDS levels.

Installing a water purifier is important to keep your family safe and protected from waterborne diseases. RO and UV water purifiers even help remove the pathogens that can cause allergic reactions.

Many diseases are caused by contaminated water, so investing in a water purifier can go a long way in keeping your loved ones safe.
