How to remove oil-based paint stains from dark coloured clothes

Removing oil-based paint stains is a tough battle. A battle that can be won with a little bit of determination and some smart tricks.

Got oil-based paint on your clothes? Don’t press the panic button yet. Keep this step-by-step guide handy to get rid of the stains.

Step 1:

Solvent. They are basically used to dissolve the paint from the fabric. Pick a thinner or turpentine can which is available in any hardware store.

Step 2:

Application. Place a dry towel beneath the stained portion and apply the paint thinner through the fabric directly. This helps remove the stain faster because it doesn’t have to push the stain all the way through the fabric.

Step 3:

Rub. Scratch the stain with the help of a cotton swab or a used brush. Repeat step 2 again after the solvent dries out and get rid of the stain easily.

Step 4:

Final touch. Rinse completely with clean water and rub the area with a bar soap or liquid detergent. Rinse again with water and launder as usual.

Top Tip

Some oil-based paints cannot be removed. If this method does not make the stain any lighter, the stain is permanent. If the stain lightens after the first attempt, only then does it make sense to repeat the process.
