Have you ever thought about cleaning your washing machine?

Yes, this magical piece of equipment gets your clothes stain-free and clean, but it also needs some TLC every now and again.

Washing machines generally hold water in specific compartments after every use. This can be a breeding ground for mould and mildew which can also result in a stale smelling laundry.

These few ingredients which you may already have in your kitchen cupboard will each act as a cleaning concoction. This concoction may help to clean your washing machine effectively so you don’t have to buy expensive washing machine cleaners.

¼ cup of water

2 cups of vinegar

¼ cup of bicarbonate of soda

1 kitchen sponge

Here are ways in which these ingredients will be put to good use…

If you have a top loader

Fill the washing machine with clean water and add the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar – you don’t need to add the ¼ cup of water in this step. The machine will eventually agitate, combining the ingredients. Once this is done, stop the cycle. Allow the water and your mixture to soak for about an hour, and then re-start the washing machine to allow the cycle to finish.

If you have a front loader

Mix together only the bicarbonate of soda from the above ingredients into the detergent compartment of your machine and pour the vinegar into the drum. Make sure you select the hottest water setting and then set your machine to a normal load. You really don’t have to do anything else, besides catching up on a good book or watching an episode of your favourite series. The “concoction” will do all the work for you as the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar is known to naturally break down mineral deposits and remove and prevent mould.

Using your kitchen sponge

Combine a few drops of Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid and water and dip your kitchen sponge into the solution to clean around the opening of the washing machine and remove any other stubborn mould and residue.

There may also be other items in your home that may need a good cleaning…

Showerhead – Pour half a cup of water and vinegar in a zip lock bag and place the shower head inside the bag – secure it with an elastic band. Soak for 10 -15 minutes before removing the bag and rinsing with clean water. Repeat it every 2 – 4 weeks.

Mattresses – Dilute a few drops of Comfort Fabric Conditioner in water and blot on any stains with a microfibre cloth. Allow to dry before replacing your bedding.

When we say, “don’t miss a spot” when cleaning, we mean it! So, for a fresh and healthy home, make sure these items are good and clean to go, the next time you’re doing the rounds at home.
