How to Get White Socks White Again?

It's easy to get stained and dirty socks but it's not always as easy to get them clean again. Especially if you don't want to use harsh chemicals or laundry detergents.

We’ve got a few age-old tips to try that are pretty much guaranteed to get those dirty white socks back to a clean white sparkle.

The Boiling Method

Your great-grandmother did it and so did her mother. It’s a method that’s been around for centuries and there’s a reason for it; it works. By boiling your dull socks with lemon, you’re loosening the fibres of the knit which allows the dirt and grime to be released. Here’s how:

  • Bring a pot of water to the boil

  • Add in ½ cup of lemon juice (squeezed from a lemon preferably) with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid.

  • Add in a few pairs of dull socks – make sure they all fit in or else you may have to do this in batches.

  • Boil the socks for about 20 – 30 minutes.

  • Wash as normal in the washing machine.

However, you do not need to go through that whole process. Surf washing products have super whitening granules, formulated for a deep clean which not only whitens your clothes but also brightens them.

The Bleach Method

If you’re ok with using good-quality bleach to whiten up your socks, then we highly recommend using the new Surf Total Hygiene range of bleach products. Surf bleach is formulated with whitening technology to bring the sparkle back to white clothes. Here’s how:

  • Fill a bucket with warm water.

  • Add in 4 tablespoons of Surf Total Hygiene Bleach and two drops of dishwashing liquid. Mix the solution well.

  • Add in your dirty white socks and allow them to soak for about 30 minutes.

  • Wash them in the machine as normal.

Both these methods will help to return your socks to their previous white wonder. And now that you’ve nailed getting your socks whiter, isn’t it time to tackle your shoes? Read our blog on How To Clean and Care For Shoes At Home now.
