How to Clean a Bedroom

While having a clean bedroom is not the only factor in a happy life, studies revealed that it reduces feelings of anxiety and improves overall mood.[1] After all, it can get stressful when you constantly stumble over piles of clothes. Remember that your bedroom is where you usually begin and end your day. So, as part of having a healthy and happy lifestyle, you should keep it tidy and organized.

Thankfully, learning how to clean a bedroom doesn’t have to be an overwhelming activity. In this blog post, we’ll share a step-by-step guide on keeping things tidy and neat in your room.

What to Prepare

  • Clothing hamper

  • Trash bags and boxes

  • Broom and/or vacuum cleaner

  • Mop

  • Microfiber duster

  • Microfiber cloth

  • All-purpose cleaner like Cif

  • Multi-purpose bleach like Domex

  • Clean bedsheets, blankets, and pillowcases

How to Clean a Bedroom in 7 Easy Steps

Cleaning your sleeping space can be easy when you follow an organized process. Here’s everything you need to learn to turn your bedroom into a tidy, peaceful, and comfortable oasis:

1. Collect dirty clothes

Take the hamper and begin collecting the dirty clothes lying around the room. At this stage, you don’t have to spend time pulling your pants right side out or unrolling your socks. You can do those when you’re washing your clothes. Besides, you’d want to be efficient with your time. So, simply gather your clothes and put them in the hamper.

If you’ve left out clean clothes, put them back in your closet. It only takes a few minutes to hang your clothes and tuck your shirts into your dresser drawers.

2. Declutter and collect the trash

Once you’ve gotten the dirty clothes out of the way, it’s time to identify items that do not belong in your bedroom. Go through the things that can be considered clutter in your room, then place them in the boxes. Make sure that you check under your bed and behind your dresser or cabinet.

You should also pick up small garbage like tissues, clothing tags, and food wrappers. Put them in the trash bags. Now, if you have old notebooks, unimportant print-outs, or magazines, we recommend learning how to recycle paper at home. This way, you can reduce your waste while tidying up your bedroom.

3. Organize your bedroom items

Has it been a while since you last cleaned your bedroom? If so, then chances are you’ve collected many items that are simply lying around. So, you should put these objects back in their rightful places. You can begin with the bigger items, then move on to smaller objects like accessories and stationery.

4. Clean and disinfect the surfaces

Take your microfiber duster and go through frequently used surfaces, including shelves, cabinets, window sills, desks, and nightstands. Once you’ve completed that step, spray the surfaces with a multi-purpose cleaner like Cif. Wipe off the remaining dirt and dust using your microfiber cloth.

Don’t forget to spray Cif on surfaces you frequently touch, including door handles and light switches. While you’re at it, you can also disinfect your electronic devices. Spend time cleaning your computer keyboard, tablet, and TV screen.

5. Sweep and mop the floor

You don’t have to move furniture around since you’re not doing a deep clean. Take your broom and sweep the dust or debris off your floor. If you have hardwood or tiled flooring, this step will suffice. However, if you have carpeted flooring, you’d need a vacuum cleaner to eliminate dust or dirt particles.

After sweeping the floor, the next step is to mop it. Mix two tablespoons of Domex multi-purpose bleach with a bucket of water. Dip your mop into the cleaning solution and wipe it over the floors. Doing so will get rid of the remaining dust and dirt. Make sure you rinse and wring your mop every few minutes to prevent it from spreading dirt. Once you’ve completed this step, your floors will look nice and clean.

6. Make your bed

We know straightening your bed can feel like an unnecessary task. At the end of the day, you’re only going to mess it up anyway. However, studies have shown that doing so will set you up for success, especially since following this routine makes you more goal-oriented, orderly, and conscientious.[2]

So, after you’ve decluttered and cleaned your room, the next step is to make your bed. You can also replace the old sheets, blankets, and pillowcases with new ones. This way, your bed will smell fresh and clean.

7. Store your cleaning materials

Don’t leave your cleaning products and materials in your bedroom. You’ve spent time tidying up the space. So, you should ensure that it’s free from clutter. Once you’re done cleaning, remember to put away anything you used.
