Long lasting flowers: top tips

Knowing how to keep flowers fresh may seem a bit complicated – there’s a lot of conflicting information out there – but here are a few simple things you can do:

  1. Make sure the vase is clear before you use it. This avoids dirt getting into the plants.

  2. Use lukewarm water. Flowers don’t like anything too hot or cold.

  3. Dissolve the flower food in the water. This gives them much-needed nutrients.

  4. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. This gives them a bigger chance to suck up food.

  5. Refrigerate flowers when away. Cooling flowers down is a great tip when it comes to how to keep flowers fresh for longer.

  6. Avoid stagnant water. Flowers like fresh water, just like us.

  7. Remove wilting parts. If it’s been a few days and you’re wondering how to keep your fresh flowers alive, removing the wilting parts should extend their life a little longer.

What about specific types of flowers? The principles are basically the same, but there are some useful extra tips that can help. Here’s what to do with some of the most popular flowers out there: roses.

  1. Change the water regularly.

  2. Place your vase in a sunny area.

How to keep an orchid alive

Need to know how often to water orchids and what other things will make them last longer? Here are some top tips:

  1. Keep orchids in bright but indirect sunlight. Direct rays burn their leaves.

  2. East-facing windows are ideal. These allow them to catch the morning light.

  3. If leaves are going red, this indicates too much sunlight. Check regularly and move if required.

  4. Only water orchids once a week. These plants aren’t that thirsty!

  5. Don’t get the centre of the plant wet – if you do then wipe it dry. This is because if the stem stays wet for too long it starts to rot.

  6. Keep in a warm room. Ideally, 20-30°C.

Those are our top tips when it comes to long-lasting flowers. A little knowledge with your plant care will go a long, long way!
