If chandeliers are not cleaned regularly, they can become covered in dirt and dust which will make them look dingy and old. Follow these tips and tricks for beautiful results.

How to Clean A Glass Chandelier

Glass or crystal chandeliers are the most common types that can be found in the home. They are popular décor items in high-traffic areas like lounges, patios and even in some kitchens.

  • Using a feather duster, first gently dust the glass or crystal chandelier to get rid of any excess dust.

  • Mix a solution of I cup of white vinegar to 2 cups of water to use as your cleaning solution. Wet a clean, soft cloth with this solution and wring it out to remove excess water. Gently wash the various parts of the chandelier.

  • Make sure you wash the frame of the chandelier and don’t forget to clean any lightbulbs too.

  • Using a new, clean, dry cloth wipe any excess solution off the parts to ensure a sparkling finish.

  • If you’ve taken your chandelier apart and are wondering what to use to clean chandelier crystals, it would be the exact same solution. You can dip the crystals into the solution individually and then rinse off and dry before inserting them back on.

How to Clean a Metal Chandelier

Here’s our advice to answer your question, how do you clean a metal chandelier. It is very similar to how you would clean a glass or crystal one with a few tweaks.

  • Add one teaspoon of lemon juice to the solution recommended above for an additional kick for cleaning metal chandeliers.

How to Clean A Brass Chandelier

When it comes to cleaning a brass chandelier, the same method is required, you just need to mix a different kind of solution.

  • Mix two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid, like Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid, with warm water.

  • Wash as directed above for glass chandeliers using the same directions.

  • For very tarnished areas you can rub vinegar and water solution onto the area. Or use Brasso for tarnished areas like you would for any other brass items.

Safety Tips When Cleaning a Chandelier

Most of us want to know how to clean a chandelier without taking it down, after all taking it down is a massive feat on its own and it’s not actually necessary in order to give it a good clean. Make sure you follow these safety tips when cleaning a chandelier at height, to keep yourself (and your precious chandelier) safe.

  • First, make sure that you’ve unplugged the chandelier from its power source before cleaning it.

  • Always use a ladder that is sturdy. Never use an old, broken ladder that wobbles as this could throw off your balance when working with your hands above your head.

  • Prepare all your cleaning solutions and rinsing solutions first, before starting. You don’t want to have to keep going up and down the ladder to get the ingredients you need.

  • Also, make sure you have the cloths and any other tools you’ll need for the job ready and waiting.

  • For extra safety, you can lay down a few thick pillows or blankets around the area you’ll be working in just in case you fall.
